What started as small project in the basement of a rented out building has become the face of the Jeevan Asha today. The Day Care is our most popular and successful programme that reaches out to over 30,000 children living in five slum pockets along Ghodbunder road in Thane city. Providing a safe, secure and clean environment with personal care and attention to these children is our major goal.
Parents who work as daily wage labourers and house maids in the nearby houses, come every morning and drop off their younger ones in the care of this centre knowing well that their children will be fed a nutritious meal, taught and fully taken care of while they are there. The centre doubles up as a bridge school while taking care of children from the age of 3.5-8 years. Basic language and mathematical skills are taught here with the aim to get to get these children admitted to a municipal school eventually.
Since its inception, Jeevan Asha Day Care Centre has impacted more than 2000 children who came to this centre as nervous and undernourished tiny tots and have grown up to be confident young adults who have big aspirations and dreams for themselves and their families.
The 99 children enrolled in our Day Care Centre this academic year, have reported marked improvement in their literacy and mathematical skills. The same facilities have been replicated in Orissa, where 70 children are currently being educated at the Jeevan Asha Day Care Centre.
An unforgettable moment for us came last year when about the 17 children who were amongst our first batch, gave their 10th grade exams.
